“Sometimes I need
only to stand
wherever I am
to be blessed.”
Mary Oliver, Evidence: Poems
👋🏻 Hi! I’m Hannah.
I’m a Senior Research Scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, a MPH graduate of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a someday-soon-PhD student (hopefully), and a believer in our collaborative ability to make this world even a tiny bit happier and healthier.
My research interests are in using statistical methods (new and old alike!) to understand mental and physical health problems. With expertise in Python and software development, I’m passionate about creating reproducible code to advance the field, especially in mental health research. At JHU-APL, I’m a member of the Neurologic and Human Performance section within the Neuroscience group of the Research and Development Department, where I have contributed to a wide variety of research projects from pandemic response to Alzheimer’s Disease precision medicine.
In my MPH work, I focused on my true passion: public mental health research. Specifically, I worked to identify differentially expressed transcripts in post-mortem brain samples of individuals with bipolar disorder treated with and without lithium. All of this was in pursuit of understanding lithium’s mechanism of action, and ultimately pushing forward effective and equitable treatments to major mental disorders.
In the future, I hope to study genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the etiology of mental disorders, especially highly heterogeneous disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD).
ELI5, please?
Yep, no worries.
